6 Ways To Improve Your Memory When You Retire

Once you reach retirement age, you will no doubt be thinking of all the fun things you can now do at your leisure. The trouble is; as we age, our memory can get affected. It’s not uncommon for elderly people to be a “bit forgetful” sometimes.

Of course, in some cases the cause of memory loss could be down to medical conditions like dementia. The good news is there are plenty of things you can do now to prevent memory loss in later life.

Here are six examples that will help you to keep your gray matter as fresh as when you were a youngster:

1. Organize your life

It never ceases to amaze me how disorganized a lot of people are these days! I often wonder how those folks manage their days and know where they put things!

As you age, it’s essential that you keep your life organized. If everything has its proper place, your life will become a simpler affair.

2. Cut out distractions in your life

Let’s say that you are trying to complete a task. Make sure that you focus on it, rather than letting yourself get distracted. Ask people not to disturb you when you’re working on something. And avoid other distractions like TV, mobile phones and so forth. Focusing on the task at hand helps you to train your mind to concentrate on things better.

3. Keep track of your medicine

As we reach our twilight years, we will no doubt have to take medicine for various medical ailments. The last thing you want to do is forget to take any vital tablets each day!

There are many things you could do. For example, you could buy a tablet dispenser for the elderly. You could even set a reminder on your smartphone or computer. Find a way that works for you.

4. Exercise at least twice a week

You don’t need to run a marathon to keep your mind in tip-top condition! But, what you should do is plenty of regular exercise. The exercises you do should be things you want to do.

For instance, you might prefer to go on long walks instead of running. Or you may wish to cycle a few miles. Exercise is good because it improves circulation and blood flow to your brain.

5. Only consume food and drinks that are healthy for you

Many scientific studies have shown that diet plays a huge part in how our brains function as we age. That’s why it is important you have a balanced diet. Eat plenty of fruit and vegetables that are rich in the nutrients your body needs. And make sure you get tested for vitamin deficiencies.

6. Make sure to get a good night’s sleep

You don’t need to be a doctor to know that poor sleep quality can mess with your head! There is much debate over how long you should sleep for; some say seven hours. Others may recommend eight.

Your body will tell you how long it needs before you’re ready for a new day of activities. Some tips to help you have a better night’s sleep include:

  • Sleeping on a comfortable mattress and pillows;

  • Ensuring the temperature in your bedroom is just right;

  • Turning off any mobile phones or other devices that have LEDs or lights.

Good luck!
