Feeling stagnant in your career? Perhaps you’re fed up of earning money for a big corporation, or you’ve reached the end of the line when it comes to career progression. Maybe you want to spend your time working a job that actually means something to you and leaves you feeling rewarded. Making a career change a little later in life can be scary, you have your routines, and chances are you have your budget based on the money you earn. Making the switch could lead to a change in your financial situation (at least at first) which is always disconcerting when you have bills to pay or a certain lifestyle you want to maintain. Some people can take the opinion “better the devil you know” when it comes to work, in the worry that they’ll end up in a role they like even less. However sometimes in life, you have to take a chance, and if you find career opportunities in tech companies, you may find a lot of fulfillment. Looking back on your life in regret that you kept a job you hated, is far scarier than taking the plunge in search of something better. If you’re after job satisfaction, something that allows you to go home each night knowing you made a genuine difference, here are a few things to consider.
Work With Children
When you work with children, you have the incredible ability to influence their lives for the better. Whether it’s working directly with kids such as teaching or social work, or indirectly such as helping to build the curriculum, you know that you’re making a positive impact on the next generation. The curriculum is a good example of how influential a job can be- it’s based on many complex social and cultural influences, deciding what children in schools will be learning about will literally shape the generation. You could do a Masters in Curriculum and Instruction program if this is something that interests you. Even if you don’t want to go back and train as a teacher, you could still work with children as a tutor. Many parents look for extra help around exam times, or if you’re experienced in a musical instrument or have another skill, this is something that could be taught.
Go Into Medicine
Helping people recover from mental and physical illness is about as rewarding as it gets. Since many careers in the medical field take many years to complete not every path might be an option, but there are still plenty to choose from. Nursing degrees typically take three years, in which time you will be working on placements which allow you to get practical experience. If you don’t want to go back to study, you could become a carer. You can often get into care positions without a whole lot of experience or qualifications and work your way up from there. This allows you to be in work and be gaining practical skills and earning money while working towards your goals. You could work with the elderly, with adults or with children and teens.
Start Your Own Business
There are few things more rewarding than starting something up from scratch and watching it succeed. If you want something flexible and to have control over it, starting your own business venture could be the way to go. Have a think about where your passions lie and go from there. No more boss breathing down your neck, this allows you to call the shots which can be incredibly freeing after years of working as an employee!
