If you want to save a bit of money then it’s normal to do your own DIY repairs here and there. Whether it’s to upcycle something you don’t need or even fixing up some old pipes, there are plenty of places where we can perform DIY repairs in order to save some money. However, there are a couple of very common mistakes that people make especially when it comes to DIY repairs, so in this article, we’re going explain a couple of those common errors so that you never make them again.
Attempting to reroute pipes with no knowledge
If you have some plumbing experience then go for it, you’re probably qualified to reroute pipes in your home. However, if you’re a beginner or only have a YouTube video to go off, then you’re probably not doing yourself any favours by attempting a pipe reroute. It’s arguably one of the more difficult DIY repairs to perform and it’s something that can easily go wrong if you purchase the wrong pipes, neglect to seal a pipe correctly or even handle the pipes too rough so that they crack, burst or end up damaged.
The last thing you want is to cause more damage to your plumbing so simply contact a specialist and get it fixed properly instead of using a half-finished DIY solution.
Attempting to replace parts of your plumbing
Whether it’s a water heater you want to replace or a pump to fix your water pressure, just don’t do it. These parts of a plumbing system are essential and unless you want to injure yourself or cause further damage to your plumbing, it’s best that you avoid touching it.
Some parts of the plumbing, such as the pump, can be replaced if you look for replacements such as Grundfos CR pumps and have the right knowledge. However, we absolutely do not recommend it if you’ve not done something similar before and we also don’t recommend that you replace your water heater unless you are a professional with the right tools. It could easily lead to dangerous situations and you don’t want to put you or your family in danger.
Attempting to clear out a blockage in your pipes
It’s actually very common to see people use all kinds of things to unclog their pipes. Some people will attempt to pour DIY solutions down the drain such as baking soda and vinegar, and others will use pipe cleansing solutions that are actually incredibly caustic. The problem with these solutions is that most of them will do just as much damage to your pipes as they will the blockage, meaning you’re going to end up weakening your pipes. To avoid this, you absolutely have to pick the right solution to use that won’t damage your pipes or else you might damage them if you use it for an extended time.
Additionally, some people attempt to remove sections of the pipe to try and unclog them. While this is often a better option, it’s also very easy to damage your plumbing and the pipes if you’re not careful.
