As we highlighted last month when Academy Award nominations were released, when it comes to “Best Director,” it’s a boys club. In 84 years, a total of four women have been nominated, and only one, Kathryn Bigelow, has ever won. (See Hollywood Gender Gap: Startling Numbers!)
Were there any women directors who should have been recognized for their work in 2011? Melissa Silverstein thinks so, and presented a list of women who she believes should have been a part of the Oscar conversation this year in the video below.
“We’re not trying to say that all of them should have been nominated (though we think a couple of them should have), what we are trying to say is that we have to find a way to get women directors into these conversations,” Silverstein wrote in a blog post at Indiewire.
