How to Make The Most of Your Money in 2016

If you’re trying to cut down your outgoings and save some cash, you’ll know how hard it can be. There’s only so much you can save from your regular paycheck. Let’s face it, the cost of living seems to rise more than wages do, and times can get tight. So it makes sense to see where you can save money on your regular outgoings. Did you know that one of the biggest expenses we have we could probably save a whole heap of cash on – if we just put our minds to it? Yep, we’re talking about the amount of energy you use in your home.

Even the smallest of cracks or gas in door and window frames can suck all the heat out of your home in no time at all. Make sure you’re not throwing your money out into the street my making sure they are  wind and watertight. This can be done on a budget with some sealant, and it’s quick and easy to do. If your doors don’t fit properly, use draught tape to make sure you’re not inviting the cold into your abode. Use draught excluders to keep the warm in and the cold out, and you’ll soon see a difference in the amount of electricity you’re paying for.

If you would like to keep an eye on how much energy you’re using, you can buy an energy monitor to see how much and when your greatest use of energy is. There are easy ways you can save on this! Make sure you switch lights off when you’re not in the room and don’t leave appliances on standby when you’re not using them. You might as well be pouring your money down the drain! You also might consider buying the most up-to-date, energy efficient appliances!

Another way many people find useful to be frugal with their use of fuel is to install a prepaid electricity meter. This lets you see in reality the electricity you have already bought trickle down. The display is in monetary terms, so it’s easy to make the association between the two. When you just have a direct debit going from your bank account every month, you don’t see the real costs of you leaving lights on and wasting your money. Pre pay meters mean you don’t have to worry about getting a big bill that you can’t afford to pay, and you don’t need a credit check.

Ensure that you have a programmable thermostat or timers for your heating system. Switch it off when you’re not in, and set it to come on just before you get home in the evening. That’s if the weather warrants it, you’re not going to need it in the height of summer. Although that depends on when you live. If you are resident in the UK, you might well need to switch it on occasionally, even in July!
