Positive Ways to Start Your Day on the Right Foot

Positive Ways to Start Your Day on the Right Foot

Waking up in the morning isn’t many people’s idea of fun. Even if you’re a morning person, your bed can call out to you not to get up and start the day. Just five more minutes, you tell yourself. Sometimes, getting out of bed can be extremely difficult. You might struggle to face the day because of your mood, what lies ahead, or even just miserable weather. A bad start to the day can mean that you’re struggling to keep your head above water until you can go to bed again. But there are ways you can try to start your day positively to help you continue the positive vibes for the rest of the day.

Have a Moment to Yourself Before Getting Up

Some people like to jump straight out of bed when they wake up. Others are forced to because they’ve left it too late to get up. If you can, try to give yourself a couple of minutes to wake up properly. While you don’t want to fall back asleep, you can take a minute to lie there or perhaps sit up and take stock. You can try to remember what you dreamed about or think about your day yesterday. Have a stretch to work out any kinks from sleeping or take a moment to think happy thoughts.

Don’t Lounge in Bed Too Long

Although you don’t have to get up right away, try not to stay in bed too long, either. Too many people are guilty of hitting the snooze button again and again. Don’t leave it until the very last second to get out of bed. Your day will be much improved if you don’t have to rush to leave the house. The key to getting out of bed sooner is getting enough rest and waking up at the right time. You might be setting your alarm clock to wake you up in the middle of deep sleep. What you really need is to wake up during the lightest phase of sleep. Tracking your sleep is a good idea to help you find the best time to wake up.

Eat a Good Breakfast

How long do you take to make and eat breakfast? Five or ten minutes? Many of us rush through breakfast or, even worse, skip it altogether. Breakfast is an important meal, setting you up for the morning ahead of you. If you can’t remember the last time you had something substantial for breakfast, it’s time to change that. Eating a proper breakfast can give you time to yourself or time with your family. If you enjoy cooking, making a cooked breakfast can be an enjoyable way to start the day. Even just chopping up some fruit can be meditative. You’ll also make sure you’re not grumpy from not having eaten properly.

Read Your Horoscope

If you believe in astrology, you might enjoy reading your horoscope to start off the day. It will give you advice for approaching your day and the rest of the week. It won’t always resonate with you, but you can often find something useful in it. There’s no need to buy a newspaper anymore. You can read your horoscope online here and on many other websites. Even if you don’t believe in horoscopes, you might find some useful tips by reading through them. At the very least, it might give you a bit of a laugh.

Meditate

Meditating can be an excellent way to start the day, and there are several ways to approach it. If you’ve never practiced any kind of meditation before, you might want to consider using an app. You can use smartphone and tablet apps like Headspace and Calm that will walk you through the steps of meditating and being mindful. However, you don’t have to use an app. You could use videos or other instructional guides to help you get started. There are lots of ways to meditate, so explore different techniques. You can find one that works for you that you can use for just a few minutes in the morning.

Wait a Bit Before Getting Online

Do you pick up your phone as soon as you wake up in the morning? Perhaps the first thing you do is check your email and social media. While it’s tempting to do that, it can usually wait until later in the day. You don’t have to think about work as soon as you wake up, or even about the attention you’re getting online. Don’t let your phone or your computer rule your life. There are lots of other ways to start the day, from listening to music to reading a book. You might want to check the news, but it’s better for later in the day if you want to avoid the doom and gloom.

Exercise

Getting moving in the morning is a great way to start the day. It energizes you, as well as releasing endorphins to boost your mood. You don’t have to do anything too strenuous. A lot of people like to start their day with yoga or tai chi. But you could also go for a run, cycle to work or go for an early morning swim. There are many exercise classes held before most people start work too. So you could have time to stop at the gym for a class before you head to the office. It can be a lot easier to exercise in the morning, instead of in the evening when you’re exhausted from your day.

Talk to Your Family

The morning can be just the right time to spend time with your family. It might not seem like it when you’re all rushing about trying to get ready. But if you can get your mornings more organized, it’s a good time for a chat. You can enjoy breakfast together and talk about your plans for the day. It’s a useful time to make sure everyone knows what’s happening during the day. So you can avoid someone forgetting that they’re going to their piano lesson or that they need to pick up the kids.

You can start your day off on the right foot any way that you want to. Experiment with different morning routines to find one that works for you.
