It’s much easier for your home to look out of date than you might think. In fact, there’s a very fine line between old-fashioned and timeless home decor. If you’re not careful, your home can end up looking like it hasn’t been updated in ten years or even that it was decorated by your grandma. You might have made some trendy design choices when you last decorated, but trends can quickly go out of style. To keep your home looking good, you either have to craft a timeless look or update the decor regularly. Here are some things you might want to reconsider as soon as possible.
Get Rid of Carpet
Carpeting can be a good choice for some homes that need help keeping the heat in. However, it’s so easy for them to look old-fashioned and dominate the rest of the room. Choices like wood, tile or vinyl flooring look much smarter and easily much more contemporary. You can then use rugs to add some more color and something comfortable underfoot. Rugs are much easier to keep clean too because you can remove them. If you must have carpet, choose a solid color (no patterns) that’s preferably light and neutral.
Update Patterns and Motifs
The wrong pattern choices can so easily make a home look old, and the same goes for certain motifs. There are no patterns or motifs that are entirely out of bounds, but you should be careful how you use them. For example, a floral pattern can look cute and colorful. But it could just as easily make your home look incredibly outdated if you use too much or even choose the wrong sized pattern. There might be some motifs that you feel are a little on the nose. A nautical motif might suit some spaces, but it can look a bit old-fashioned.
Mix Up Matching Items
If things in your home are looking a bit too matchy-matchy, it could definitely have an aging effect on the decor. Fortunately, it’s often easy to change this without having to make any huge changes. For example, if you have two different sofas with matching throw pillows, simply swap the pillows around. If you have a matching sofa and armchair, consider getting a new cover for one of them or even placing a throw over the chair. Find some ways to create some contrast for better composition.
Be Careful With Wallpaper
Wallpaper doesn’t have to be outdated, but it can be if you use it in the wrong way. Choosing the wrong pattern or color or even using too much wallpaper could be a mistake. It’s also a good idea to stay away from wallpaper borders. You might think it looks cute in a nursery, but even there it can appear to be a bit cheesy and old-fashioned. If you want to do wallpaper well, you might consider trying some bold colors and patterns. Think about whether to stick to one or two feature walls too, rather than wallpapering an entire room.
An outdated home can be updated in a day if you know what you’re doing. It doesn’t take much to refresh everything.
