It’s bedtime, and you’re ready to settle down and enjoy a nice long sleep. You’re fully relaxed, and you can feel your eyes drooping as soon as your head hits the pillow. Fast forward eight hours and you’re waking up in a lot of pain. Your back is sore, and you may even feel a lot of tension in your neck. It’s a horrible soreness, but it ends up going away in a few hours after you’ve stood up and got on with your day.
This scenario is the reality for many people all over the world. Every day, without fail, you wake up with a sore back/neck – despite the fact that you don’t have any back/neck pain during the day. Why does this always happen, what’s causing your early morning soreness? Normally, it’s because of one or all of these things:
A Poor Sleeping Position
Some of you may be unaware that there is actually a peak sleeping position if you want to achieve good back health. This is basically lying flat on your back, with your legs slightly apart. Of course, not everyone sleeps like this. If you sleep on your stomach, you cause your lower back to arch all night long, which leads to intense soreness in the morning. If you sleep in the fetal position, then you’re basically replicating what it’s like to sit down as your legs are bent. This causes tight hip muscles, which pull on your lower back muscles, causing pain. Similarly, sleep on your side, and you’ll pretty much always wake up with a sore side!
An Old Mattress
When you first buy a mattress, it offers the best support it will ever possibly provide your body with. Then, as the years go by, it gradually gets worse and worse. There’s a lot of debate surrounding the question of how long does a mattress last, with most people arguing the average lifespan is ten years. This can vary depending on the type of mattress, etc. but if yours is any older than this, then it should be a cause for concern. An old mattress offers your poor back no support at all. Therefore, you spend eight hours sleeping on something that puts the muscles under increased strain. As a result, you wake up every morning feeling sore!
Too Many Pillows
Sleeping with two pillows under your head feels comfortable at the time, but it’s actually the top cause of morning neck pain. By doing this, you elevate your head and put increased strain on your neck. This is often what causes you to wake up with a very stiff neck and shoulders. Instead, only sleep with one pillow under your head – ideally one that offers decent support as well.
If you’re reading this and nodding your head at all three points, then there’s no wonder you keep feeling sore in the morning! It’s crucial that you address the cause of your morning pain as soon as possible. Slowly but surely, it will all add up, and you’ll end up with permanent back/neck pain throughout the day as well.
